You Alone Make, Keep and Take Away
The story
Hindu thought usually gives three jobs to three gods: Brahma makes the world, Vishnu keeps it, Shiva takes it back. This verse gives all three to Ganesha, and it says "alone" each time. It is the Atharvashirsha's way of saying that the god people pray to at the start of every task is not a minor helper but the whole of it.
त्वमेव केवलं कर्तासि। त्वमेव केवलं धर्तासि। त्वमेव केवलं हर्तासि॥
tvameva kevalaṃ kartāsi | tvameva kevalaṃ dhartāsi | tvameva kevalaṃ hartāsi ||
Ganapati Atharvashirsha, verse 1 in the common numbering; our translation
The same moment, today
On a quiet street, one woman runs the bakery by herself. She mixes the dough before sunrise, sells the loaves all morning, and sweeps up and locks the door at three. Most shops would need three people for that. When one person does all of it, there's no question whose bread it is.

In Hindu thought those three big jobs usually go to three different gods. Brahma makes the world, Vishnu keeps it going, and Shiva takes it back. This line gives all three to Ganesha, and it says "alone" each time. Ganesha is usually the god people pray to first, at the start of a task. Here the hymn says he isn't only there at the start. He is the whole of the work, from beginning to end. The English is our own plain rendering of the Sanskrit.
The lesson
When you start something, think about who will see it through to the end, and not only about who will help you begin.
Where this comes from
A late hymn with a large claim
The Ganapati Atharvashirsha was composed long after the Vedas, probably in the 16th or 17th century, though tradition attaches it to the Atharva Veda. It belongs to the Ganapatya tradition, whose followers worship Ganesha as the highest god. This line is where that belief is said most plainly.
The god people call on to start a job is, in this hymn, the one who finishes it too.
