This Whole World Is Born From You
The story
The verse runs through the life of the world in four steps: it is born from you, it stands in you, it dissolves into you, it returns to you. Then it names the five elements, earth, water, fire, air and space, as his. A god people keep on a dashboard or above a shop door is described here as the place the whole world comes from.
सर्वं जगदिदं त्वत्तो जायते। सर्वं जगदिदं त्वत्तस्तिष्ठति॥
sarvaṃ jagadidaṃ tvatto jāyate | sarvaṃ jagadidaṃ tvattastiṣṭhati ||
Ganapati Atharvashirsha, verse 5 in the common numbering; our translation
The same moment, today
Plenty of cars have a small Ganesha on the dashboard. Someone's mother put it there, or it came with the car from the last owner. It sits by the air vents, a little dusty, and most drivers think of it as a good-luck charm for the commute.
This verse says much more about him. It says the whole world is born from Ganesha, stands in him, dissolves into him and returns to him. Then it says he is the five elements, earth, water, fire, air and space. Most people think of Ganesha as a friendly helper who clears away bad luck. This verse calls him the place the whole world comes from. The English here is our own plain rendering of the Sanskrit.
The lesson
It's worth reading what the old words behind a familiar figure actually say. They often claim more than you'd guess.
Where this comes from
The highest god, in one tradition
The Ganapati Atharvashirsha comes from the Ganapatya tradition, which worships Ganesha as the highest god, and this verse states that belief in full. The hymn is late, probably 16th or 17th century, though tradition attaches it to the Atharva Veda. It walks through the life of the world in four steps and then names the five elements, the way older texts speak of Brahman.
The small figure on the dashboard, in this hymn, holds up the whole world.
