Ganapati Atharvashirsha

You Are the Truth Made Visible

The story

These are the first words of the Atharvashirsha after its peace invocation. "Tattvamasi", you are that, is a phrase from the Chandogya Upanishad, where a father teaches his son that the self and the ground of everything are one. The hymn takes that famous phrase and says it to Ganesha: what the old Upanishad points to, you are, and you can be seen.

ॐ नमस्ते गणपतये। त्वमेव प्रत्यक्षं तत्त्वमसि॥

oṃ namaste gaṇapataye | tvameva pratyakṣaṃ tattvamasi ||

Ganapati Atharvashirsha, verse 1 in the common numbering; our translation

The same moment, today

Most people have tried to give directions over the phone and failed. Turn left at the old gas station, then right where the bakery used to be. The other person still gets lost. Then they send a photo of the corner, and the answer takes five seconds: they're one block too far. It was the same corner all along, but now both of them can see it.

You Are the Truth Made Visible
Ganesha as a Pahari miniature, before a white pavilion.

This line does something like that for an idea. The Upanishads describe the highest reality, Brahman, as having no form at all, which is hard to pray to and hard to picture. The Chandogya Upanishad sums up its teaching in two words, tattvamasi, you are that. The Atharvashirsha takes that phrase and adds pratyaksham, before the eyes. It tells Ganesha that he is that same reality, in a form people can see. The English here is our own plain rendering of the Sanskrit.

The lesson

When an idea feels too big to hold, look for the place where it shows up in front of you. That's usually where people start to understand it.

Where this comes from

The first words of the hymn

These words come right after the hymn's opening prayer for peace, so they're the first thing it says to Ganesha. Tradition attaches the Atharvashirsha to the Atharva Veda, but scholars date it to about the 16th or 17th century. During Ganesh Chaturthi people recite the whole hymn many times over, sometimes twenty-one times in a sitting and sometimes a thousand.

A big idea is easier to love once you can see it.
