Self-Counsel First
You catch your face in the mirror before a morning meeting. You are about to say yes to a project that will swallow your weeknights. You text two coworkers for a read. You scroll old emails looking for a hint. You ask your partner on the way out the door. The meeting starts and you say yes because everyone looks at you and you want to look game. We often outsource our choices. We poll friends, follow trends, and hope a strong voice will spare us a hard call. That keeps us moving but not in a direction we chose. Taking counsel with yourself means asking what matters to you, what is yours to do, and what you will sign your name to next week. Without that, your work belongs to whoever you last spoke to. You look busy and feel hollow because you never agreed with yourself first.

In 2006, psychologists Geoffrey Cohen and colleagues ran a study with seventh graders in a suburban U.S. school. Early in the term, some students spent about fifteen minutes writing about their most important values. Others wrote about values that mattered least to them. The exercise was simple and private. By the end of the term, the students who affirmed their own values earned higher grades, and the racial achievement gap in that school narrowed. The effect showed up again in follow-ups. A short session of honest self-reflection changed how students handled stress and schoolwork. It was not pep talk; it was taking counsel with themselves on paper.
