Practice Over Talk
You are in the group chat at night about a coworker who lied on an expense report. People write long opinions. You type and delete. The thread grows. No one calls the person who caught it. No one talks to the manager. The next morning there is a meeting about company values. It runs long and fixes nothing. After lunch, you pass a cart in the hallway with filings that need sorting because the admin is out sick. You keep walking because you are late to the next values talk.
We like to talk about goodness because talk is clean. It costs nothing and wins points from people we want to impress. Action is specific and exposes us to judgment. If you help, you might do it clumsily and someone may frown. So we argue about ideals and delay the part that would change a day. A column does its job by taking weight, not by giving a speech about loads.

In 2014, Kirk Kristofferson, Katherine White, and John Peloza ran a set of experiments about slacktivism. In one study at the University of British Columbia, they asked people to express support for a charity by wearing a pin or joining a Facebook page. Some did it in public, where others could see. Others did it in private, with no audience. Later, everyone got a real ask: a donation or time. The public supporters gave less and volunteered less than people who had stayed quiet. The private supporters did more. The team’s point was simple: when we make a show of our values, the show scratches the itch and drains the drive to act.
A small reminder, on the fridge door or the laptop lid, that the hour spent arguing could become one decent act.
