Truth Is God
In December 1931 Mahatma Gandhi traveled through Switzerland on his way home from London. He had spent three months at the second Round Table Conference, and the talks had ended with no agreement. He stayed with the writer Romain Rolland in Villeneuve. On 8 December he took an afternoon train to Lausanne to speak in a crowded hall. A listener asked him what he believed about God. For years he had taught that God is Truth. That evening he changed his phrasing. He told the gathering, "Truth is God."
The change came from a practical problem in conversation. When you begin with God, an atheist walks away, because you have used a word they reject. Nobody walks away from truth. Even an atheist who denies every church still searches for facts and respects evidence. Gandhiji pointed out that people fight endlessly over religious names and doctrines. Truth gives everyone a shared ground that no one can deny. It turns an article of faith into an inquiry that anyone can join.
Therefore
When you need to settle a dispute, begin with the facts that both sides already admit. The conversation can move forward only from ground that nobody rejects.

His secretary Mahadev Desai took down the speech in Lausanne, and Edmond Privat helped interpret it for the Swiss audience. Gandhiji spoke in Geneva two days later, passed through Rome to see Benito Mussolini, and boarded his ship at Brindisi. His weekly paper, Young India, printed the Lausanne address on 31 December 1931. Four days later, on 4 January 1932, police arrested Gandhiji in Bombay and banned the Indian National Congress. He kept the reversed phrase in his letters and articles for the rest of his life. It treated truth as a test you perform rather than a dogma you accept.
