The Seed and the Tree
In November 1909 Mahatma Gandhi sailed from London to South Africa aboard the Kildonan Castle. He had spent four months lobbying the British government alongside merchant Haji Habib, and the mission had failed. In London he had argued with young Indian radicals who believed in political murder. Madan Lal Dhingra had shot Sir Curzon Wyllie in July and had been hanged in August. On the ship, Gandhiji wrote Hind Swaraj in Gujarati to answer them. He shaped the book as a talk between a reader and an editor. In chapter sixteen, the reader argues that good ends excuse violent methods.
Gandhiji answered with a comparison: "The means may be likened to a seed, the end to a tree; and there is just the same inviolable connection between the means and the end as there is between the seed and the tree." He did not treat this as advice about good manners. He saw it as a rule of cause and effect. If you plant a weed, you will not get a rose. If you cheat on an exam to get a job, you bring that dishonesty into your work. The method you choose is not a neutral path to a result. It is the result starting to grow.

Indian Opinion, December 1909
Gandhiji published the text in his South African newspaper, Indian Opinion, in December 1909. In January 1910, the press printed it as a booklet. Two months later, the British government in Bombay banned the Gujarati edition as seditious. Gandhiji translated the book into English under the title Indian Home Rule so the argument could circulate anyway. He sent copies to Leo Tolstoy in Russia and to politicians in London. He held to the seed and the tree for the rest of his life. Every movement he led was judged by how people acted, not only by what laws they altered.
