Not a Garment
In September 1939, Germany invaded Poland, and Britain entered the war. The British Viceroy declared India at war without consulting any Indian leader. The leaders of the Indian National Congress wanted to bargain their military help for independence. They asked Mahatma Gandhi if non-violence could survive modern warfare. Most politicians had treated non-violence as a temporary tactic that was useful only until they gained power. Gandhiji refused that trade. He answered them in his weekly paper, Harijan: "Non-violence is not a garment to be put on and off at will. Its seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our very being."
People often treat their standards like jackets. They wear a principle when the weather is mild, but they drop it as soon as conditions get rough. A company promises fair pay until profits fall, and then it cuts salaries overnight. A person claims to be patient until an angry driver cuts into their lane. When an ethic changes the moment it costs something, it is not an ethic. It is only an ordinary calculation about what pays off right now.
Therefore
Decide in advance what you will not trade away when work gets stressful or tempers rise. If a commitment disappears under pressure, it was never a commitment.

After the Viceroy declared war, the Congress ministries resigned in eight provinces. Politicians wanted to trade Indian troops to Britain in exchange for swaraj, which means self-rule. They thought ahimsa, or non-violence, was simply a peacetime tactic. When Britain ignored their offers, the leaders grew frustrated and drifted away from Gandhiji. They felt helpless without an army. Gandhiji held his ground through the war years, and in 1942 he called for the British to quit India without offering any military trade. His stand worked because it kept the movement united under its own power. He believed that if you win freedom by borrowing someone else's guns, you only become another ruler with a weapon.
