Knowledge Without Character
In October 1925 Mahatma Gandhi was touring Kutch in Gujarat. He was still sending regular copy back to Ahmedabad for Young India, the weekly he edited. A correspondent whom he described only as a fair friend had sent him a list of seven social traps. The lines came from a sermon given earlier that year by Canon Frederick Lewis Donaldson at Westminster Abbey. Gandhiji decided to print the list without changing a single phrase. On 22 October 1925, under the heading Seven Social Sins, he placed the lines before his readers, including the warning against "Knowledge without character."
People often assume that schooling makes a person decent. But learning by itself only sharpens the mind, and a sharp mind can still do great damage. A skilled lawyer can use the law to rob people legally, and an educated banker can steal with a pen. Gandhiji knew that skill without decency is dangerous. When people gather facts without learning how to care for others, their intelligence just helps them get away with selfish acts.
Therefore
Do not trust skill until you see how someone treats other people. A clever person who lacks decency is always dangerous.
A Slip of Paper, 1947
In 1947 Gandhiji wrote the seven items onto a slip of paper and gave it to his grandson, Arun Gandhi. The boy had been getting into fights at school, and he believed violence only meant physical beatings. Gandhiji wanted him to see how easily harm takes root in ordinary life. He called the seven sins the hidden sources of violence. Arun Gandhi kept the note and read it for the rest of his life. The list helped him understand that violence does not start with fists or weapons. It starts whenever people take privileges for themselves and ignore the duties that keep a community whole.
