Control and Endure
Your phone pings at 10 p.m. Your morning flight is canceled. The app puts you behind hundreds of callers. You sit on the bed and refresh every two minutes. You think about the nine a.m. meeting and the pickup you promised at school. You want to beg a stranger to fix all of it. Then you book the first open seat from a different airport. You text your boss. You ask a neighbor to cover pickup. The storm still sits over the runway.
Epictetus splits the world into what you do and what you take. You decide your next action and your view of the event. You do not decide weather, bosses, markets, or other people. When you try to move those, you burn energy and add fear. Endurance is not passivity. It is the steady choice to hold while pain or delay runs its course, and to keep doing the small actions that are still yours.

Ellen Langer, 1975
In 1975 at Harvard, psychologist Ellen Langer ran studies on chance. In one, she gave people lottery tickets. Some picked their own numbers. Others were handed a ticket. Later she tried to buy them back. The choosers demanded more money, as if choice created control. In another setup, people rolled dice harder for high numbers and softer for low ones. Force could not change the odds, but behavior suggested it could. Langer called this the illusion of control. Her work shows the trap: we treat chance as steerable and suffer for it.
