About this quote
Who said it
Epictetus (c. 50–135 CE) was born a slave in Phrygia and freed in adulthood. After being exiled from Rome under the emperor Domitian, he taught at Nicopolis on the Greek coast. He wrote nothing himself; his student Arrian transcribed his lectures as the Discourses and a short handbook called the Enchiridion. This line is the very first sentence of the Enchiridion — not a stray aphorism but the foundation stone of his entire system.
What it means
Stoics call this the dichotomy of control. In our power: opinion, intention, desire, aversion — what we do with our own minds. Not in our power: body, property, reputation, others' opinions — anything mediated through circumstance. Epictetus's diagnosis is austere: most human suffering comes from confusing these two categories — agonizing over what cannot be moved while neglecting what can. The remedy is to train effort and emotion onto the first list and let the second list go.
Why it endures
A second-century Greek sentence that now circulates as life-advice on Twitter, in therapy rooms, and in addiction recovery (the Serenity Prayer is a direct paraphrase). The diagnosis hasn't aged: most modern anxiety is generated by trying to control variables — others' opinions, the news cycle, the future — that cannot actually be controlled.
