Halloween Before Pumpkins

Toss an apple peel over your shoulder; it lands as their initial.

The same moment, today

Most people have looked at a phone screen and tried to read meaning into a delay. An unanswered text message feels like bad news. A message sent five minutes early feels like love. There isn't any real proof either way, but waiting makes people restless. The mind hates an empty space when it cares about someone. When someone wants an answer about the future, almost any pattern starts to look like a clue.

Toss an apple peel over your shoulder; it lands as their initial.
An apple peel curled on flagstones.

That's the impulse behind peeling an apple in one ribbon and throwing it over your shoulder. People didn't do it because they had ironclad faith in fruit skin. They did it because waiting to find out who you might marry is uncomfortable, and a little suspense feels better than sitting still. If the strip broke, it meant bad luck. If it landed in a heap, everyone leaned in to argue about which letter it looked like. It turned private anxiety into a room full of friends seeing what they hoped to see.

The lesson

When you're waiting on something you can't control, watch out for the patterns you start seeing. We usually find the letter we were already hoping to read.

Where this comes from

Hobnelia's spell

In 1714, the English poet John Gay published The Shepherd's Week. In one poem, a young woman named Hobnelia stands alone and tries rustic charms to win her sweetheart, Lubberkin. She cuts an apple skin in one long strip, flings it over her head, and sees the letter L form on the grass. The same custom showed up across Britain and North America for centuries, especially on Halloween and St. Simon and Jude's Day. John Brand recorded it in his Popular Antiquities, and Ruth Edna Kelley noted it in 1919. People loved the game because an unbroken peel always curled into something.

When we want an answer badly enough, we can find a sign in almost anything.
