Little Is Enough
You open your phone while you wait for the bus. An ad for a new blender pops up, and you add it to your cart. You also add a yoga mat, a big water bottle with time marks, and the nicer headphones you almost bought last month. You picture tomorrow being smoother if you get them. Then you remember the drawer with three old bottles and a mat you rarely roll out. The bus comes and you forget the cart, but not the itch.
Most of us tell a story that happiness needs a few more things. The story sticks because small upgrades feel good for a week. Then we get used to them and move the bar. This is why the drawer fills and the calendar clogs. What tends to help is smaller and cheaper: sleep, a walk, a real talk with someone you like, and work you can finish. When you give those your best attention, the rest shrinks.

Kahneman and Deaton, 2010
At Princeton in 2010, Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton studied 450,000 daily surveys from Americans collected by Gallup in 2008 and 2009. People rated their mood yesterday and their life overall. As income rose, people said their life overall looked better. But day-to-day feelings of joy, stress, and sadness stopped improving much once household income was around seventy-five thousand dollars a year. More money kept changing how people judged their life on paper, but it did less for how yesterday actually felt. Their point was not that money is bad. It was that daily well-being depends more on other things.
A small reminder, on a fridge door or a laptop lid, that a happy day often needs sleep, a walk, and one good talk.
