A Face to Test By
In August 1947 India gained independence and was divided. New Delhi held ceremonies on 15 August, but Mahatma Gandhi refused to go. He stayed in Calcutta at Hydari Manzil, an old house in Beliaghata, living beside the Muslim politician Shaheed Suhrawardy. For a year, mobs of Hindus and Muslims had been killing each other across Bengal. Gandhiji walked the lanes, held prayer meetings, and spoke to both sides. The killings stopped while he was there. In that month, surrounded by ruins and refugees, he wrote a test on a small slip of paper for people who did not know how to act.
The test was not an abstract rule. Gandhiji told the reader: "Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him." Most people think about helping humanity, but humanity has no eyes and no voice. You cannot ask humanity if a decision helped it pay the rent or buy rice. When you picture one person whose name and face you actually know, the excuses stop. If your next plan does not give that one person more control over their own life, the plan is not doing what you told yourself it was doing.
Therefore
When you are stuck on a difficult decision, test it against a specific person who has less power than you do. Ask if what you are about to do gives them any ground back.

The note carried no recipient name. In September 1947 fighting broke out in Calcutta again, and Gandhiji began a fast until the leaders signed a peace pledge. After his death, his secretary Pyarelal Nayyar kept the paper. In 1958 Pyarelal published a facsimile of it in the second volume of Mahatma Gandhi: The Last Phase. He called it the talisman, using Gandhiji's own opening word. The note asked whether an action would lead to swaraj—self-rule—for the hungry millions, and promised that testing yourself against that face would make your doubts melt away.
