Crescent Moon

You take the trash out after dinner and the sky is not dark yet. Over the roofs hangs a thin curve of light. You know it is the Moon, but it looks smaller and sharper than you expect. Your phone buzzes in your pocket, and you almost go back inside. You keep looking. The bright edge is crisp and cratered, and the rest of the circle shows a faint gray glow. A jet slips beneath it and is gone. The street is quiet again.

Galileo's Moon Cosmic Wonder
Plate. Crescent Moon — the thin sunlit arc.

A crescent appears when the Sun lights only a small slice of the Moon that faces us. The horns point away from the Sun, which tells you where the Sun just set or will soon rise. A waxing crescent hangs in the west after sunset and grows night by night. A waning crescent rises before dawn in the east and shrinks toward new. The bright rim sits along the terminator, where long shadows make craters stand out. The dim glow across the rest is earthshine, sunlight bouncing from Earth onto the Moon.

Therefore

Look for the crescent in twilight when the sky is still bright. Steady binoculars on a fence or car roof, and trace the shadows along the edge.

Galileo, 1610

In 1610, Galileo turned a small telescope on a crescent Moon and saw something that bare eyes miss. The bright edge was scalloped, not smooth. Tiny peaks cast long shadows, and dark pits lay just past the line between day and night. He measured those shadows to estimate mountain heights and argued that the Moon was a rough world, not a polished sphere. He published the sketches in Sidereus Nuncius. Anyone who points even cheap binoculars at a crescent tonight can repeat the heart of his result in a minute.

A small reminder, on a porch rail or a field notebook, that the Moon changes quickly and rewards a short, quiet look.
