Halloween Before Pumpkins
A ring hidden in the colcannon promised a wedding.
The same moment, today
Family dinners can turn competitive over the smallest things. When someone sets down a tray of cupcakes, people look closely before they reach out. They look for the one with the extra sprinkles or the cherry on top. It isn't that anyone needs the extra sugar. People just enjoy the feeling of being picked by good luck, even for five seconds. It turns an ordinary supper into a game that everyone wants to win.

Hiding a ring in mashed potatoes worked on that exact feeling. The cook folded the charm into the colcannon, and whoever spooned it up got a promise of marriage within the year. It gave everyone at the table an easy excuse to talk about what they hoped would happen next in their lives. The future can feel heavy and uncertain when you face it alone. Sharing a bowl of warm potatoes and joking about who might marry next takes the edge off that worry.
The lesson
If you want people to talk about what they hope for, make it a game. It's much easier to admit what you want when everyone is laughing around a table.
Where this comes from
A fast day feast in rural Ireland
In rural Irish counties like Cavan and Mayo, October thirty-first was a church fast day where people couldn't eat meat. Families ate colcannon instead, mashing potatoes with cabbage, milk, and butter. As Florence Irwin noted in nineteen thirty-seven, the cook hid a wedding ring wrapped in greaseproof paper inside the dish. Finding it promised a wedding within twelve months. In nineteen seventy-two, folklorist Kevin Danaher recorded how other charms were often hidden too, including coins for wealth or buttons for bachelors. Schoolchildren wrote down the same custom for the National Folklore Collection in the late nineteen thirties.
